We are tracing the Gault family. William Gault, born 1797 married Sarah Purkiss of West Wickham on 15 April 1821. It appears William was born in Withersfield. Many Gaults are recorded in Great Thurlow in 1830's, Bradgfield St George, Bradfield Combust, Please, do you have information on them, or are you able to tell us where to visit to trace the records further back? Thank you! Please e-mail brian-gault@hotmail.co.uk

I am descended from the Fitch family that lived and worked in Little Thurlow in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Many were shoemakers. My great-grandfather, William Fitch, walked to London in the 1840’s, became a successful publican and founded a London Fitch family. I would be pleased to make contact with anyone researching FITCH in or from Little Thurlow at frankjfitch@aol.com

What a wonderful website! I didn't know our family name had such a long history until my wife found the site earlier this year. I'm a piano tuner, might there be piano or two in your village? I enjoyed the photos and the histories.

I lived at 109 Bury Road, Great Thurlow from 1950 to 1968. My father, Charlie Overill, was farm foreman for most of that time and my mother, Evelyn Overill, was in the Womens Institute, the Mothers Union, and was CMS Secretary at the church. I had piano lessons from Miss Grace Page, and later on organ lessons at the church. Mrs Herbert Arnold was the Headmistress at the village school and Rev Barrington-Barnes was the Rector.

What happened to the newsletters from Sept-Oct-Nov 07? I've been reading every word and loving every minute of it. I live in a small town in Nebraska--not nearly as lovely as yours--but having the same issues--right down to the windmill generators-- the next small town--Kimball, Nebraska--has a windmill farm. Believe me--they are stunning. Esprcially in the smdhills of Nebraska. I love your newsletter> Thank you. Kathy Thurlow (yes-really Thurlow!)

My first job in Haverhill was in Gurteens. My foreman was Jack Yale. Then there was Fred and Bill. And David, who was in the Salvation Army band. I was only there a short time but I remember these people because they were very kind to me and helped me in my first job. I got so homesick for Greenwich after five years I decided to come home.

Like many others I have been researching (the Rowlinson )family history and would be glad to hear from anyone else sarahjanechristophorou@hotmail.com regarding my search. However, this site is a delight to read for any reason and a great way to preserve village history. Most villages would benefit from such well recorded memories, you feel as if you have been to "The Cock".

Well done Little Thurlow Projects on yet another publication, "Walks round The Thurlows", by Mary Hilton and Jeremy Mynott with illustrations and sketch maps by Rachel Drury. Of particular interest to me is the drawing of "Larkspur Cottage". My grandfather who was the village cobbler, lived in the north end when it was a pair of cottages, which was also shared by my parents, and my birthplace in 1929. This booklet is another fine addition to the other publications on the Thurlows, and is excellent value at £4 95. A nice village website! Best wishes John Rowling

My wife is descended from Robert Burton (b.1817 Thurlow to William & Mary) & Mary Ann Paxman (b.1819 Dullingham CAM to John & Mary) who were married in Little Thurlow on 9 Nov 1839. They had at least four children born in Thurlow, Susan b.1843, William 1847, Robert 1848 & Mark 1852. Three others may have been born in Thurlow. The family migrated to Sydney NSW in the ship Constitution arriving on 27 May 1855 but were quarantined until 16 July. There were many deaths on the voyage & in quarantine & a memorial was built to the dead. Robert died of snake bite in 1866 & Mary Ann of old age in 1908. A reunion of passengers was held in 1905 and now the 150th anniversary of the voyage is being celebrated at the North Head Quarantine Station, Manly NSW on 17 July 2005. Their father Abraham was the Excise Officer at Haverhill. William left to open his own shop in Islington. Does anyone know what happened to Mary Ann? Did she marry a local boy? I noted in your pages that a Mr Paxman worked in the Little Thurlow paintshop. Paxmans are now scattered all over the world knowing very little of their roots. Ever since then I have tried to visit at least once a year so my family can see their name on sign posts and signs. I remember as a child visiting my grandfather Jack Buckle at Mungo Lodge in the late sixties, early seventies, where he lived with my grandmother Alice. He worked as a gardener on the estate - would have been in the late fifties - early sixties. I don't remember an awful lot except that the house was very dark! There was an immaculate garden! My mother June Buckle went to school at the Cangle in Haverhill. Perhaps someone will remember them!

What a splendid project! Was it done for the Millennium? I have been trying to find out if my great great grandfather John Day, born 1774, from either Castle Camps or Shudy Camps is a descendant of John Daye the printer 1522-84 who is buried in Little Bradley church where I saw a brass about twenty five years ago. A son, John, was vicar of Great Thurlow, but there were many more children. I would like to trace back my relative John Day's ancestors to see if there is a link along those two centuries. Any ideas anyone?I am a descendant of the Linton Days where John settled around 1790 and had three wives and about twelve kids.I was intrigued that Joy Turner mentions on a post here that her great great aunt was Mary Anne Day. My great grandmother has the same name. She married Benjamin of the Linton Days. Wonder if they are the sameperson. The villages are all pretty close as I recall from my childhood visits. Would Mary Hilton, a distant relative of Joy's have any Day connections, by any chance?

Great site. I spent my boyhood in Weston Colville just over the county border in Cambridgeshire. The infrastructure of Wratting Common was in Weston and we all thought it should be named after our village!! Many Westoners worked on its construction and had civvy jobs there. I too remembered being told the date when the planes would arrive - even what type. It was commeon knowledge at school. So much for wartime hush-hush!! Great to see that someone remembers 'sheening'. When I talk of it today people think I'm an old fart. I've always thought the word came from 'machining' which was a revolutionary form of threshing. Those old 'drums' and steam engines. What memories. Thanks for jogging 'em ! PS I left Wessun and Cambs in 1953 and after 50 years have managed to get back to the area aka Gods Country - sorry you South Folk people but its true.

Just "found" this site and SO pleased to see the area my ancestors lived. It is wonderful to get a feel for the history of Little Thurlow which is where my THURGOOD's (Thurrowgood) lived in the early to mid 1800's. My branch moved to CARLTON, Cambridgeshire which also has a great site for us "long distancer's" to relate to! Are there any plans to post any census information in the future??

Thank you for producing such a wonderful book. My ancestors, the Radfords, Sandersons, Smiths, and Mills, (to name but a few) had roots in the village and in Great Bradley. I can recommend the Cock as we lunched there during a short stop in 1999. Thanks again

Wonderful! I have lived here at "The Old Rose & Crown" (Great Thurlow!) for the past two years and was delighted to find out more about the history of the villages. Please, anyone with info on the history of "The Crown Inn" do let me know! I am particuarly interested in old photographs and know there must be loads more out there??!! Thank you.

It is lovely to be able to look at the website to get such a feeling of home when I am so far away. I've only been gone two months and will be back in December, but I am sorry to be missing the fields changing colour and being chopped and the tractors going up and down The Street Mostly though, I miss sitting my Mum & Dad's beautiful garden at Corner Cottage! I look forward to coming home at Christmas, even though I will probably freeze to death trying to acclimatise to an English winter from a very humid 32degrees!

What a facinating website! As Iris might remember i am decended from the Coote famly from The Green.I have visited the village three times. I am still researching my family tree and have quite a large database. However there are one or two loose ends to tie up. If anyone would like to e-mail me regarding the Coote family and Wallace/Wallis families i will be glad to swap information. My best wishes to you all, Russell

What a smashing idea and way to present a village! My very dear friends, Tom & Rosemary have told me about your website and could not wait to have a look asap. And it was also the best and easiest way to see how they live now (As we still have not managed for so many years now to meet again), but I promise! very soon we will arrange something and now I even more want to get to know Little Thurlow a bit better. Well done!

I am really pleased to have found this site which I discovered through my copy of the beautiful book 'Little Thurlow 2000'. I have never been to Little or Great Thurlow, but I feel very much a part of it. A number of ancestors hail from the villages and I am probably related, if somewhat distantly, to most of the people who have put comments on this site. My g-g-grandmother was a Barrett. My g-g-grandfather was named Collins (and may have come from Great Thurlow). Traylen, Upchurch, Taylor, Willows and Brown are all old family names. I will make it to Thurlow one day, but in the mean time am enjoying my copy of 'the book' very much.

As a relative of a resident of the village who has been intimately involved in the creation of the book I must confess to having been "encouraged" to visit the site and leave a message ! That said I am most impressed with the site as well as the content of the book which I've seen and studied in some detail. The book works so well for me because of the size of the village and the intimacy which this can create, it wouldn't work so well with larger villages and towns in the same format. I hope that it serves to bring the community together as a shared experience, at the very least you all know a lot more about each other than before ! If only all towns and villages could go through this type of process with a permanent record, we would have an invaluable and treasured resource for future generations. As I will be visiting Little Thurlow this coming weekend I can leave my best wishes in person as well as on a web-site.

This wonderful project prompted a very long overdue return visit to the scene of a whole childhood's worth of summer holidays and magic memories, based at the Cock Inn ,where my dad Colin used to sneak me into the bar for a sip or 2 of beer before Aunty Rene's dinner. Oh the perks of being born a Rowlinson! Congratulations on a terrific achievement, a treasure forever.
